There is a quiet tension many of us carry into our days—the pull between what is in front of us and what waits just ahead. Responsibilities, expectations, and unfinished thoughts can crowd the mind before the day has even begun.
Jesus speaks directly to this when He says, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”(Matthew 6:34). This isn’t a call to ignore responsibility, but an invitation to resist borrowing stress from a future that hasn’t arrived.
For those of us whose minds tend to race—whether from anxiety, anticipation, or the weight of transition—this reminder is grounding. We may not always be able to control the presence of anxious thoughts, but we can choose where our attention rests.
Paul offers a practice for that choice: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7). Prayer doesn’t eliminate pressure; it places it where it belongs.
And then comes the posture that holds it all together: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2). This isn’t an escape from real life—it’s a reordering of it. When God is first in our perspective, the demands of the day find their proper place.
Today, the invitation is simple: stay with today. Begin where you are. Let prayer shape your focus, and let God meet you in the ordinary rhythms of the day ahead.
Imaginary Timelines
Learning how to throw off all care
When worry weighs heavy the anticipation of what isn’t even there
Tomorrow intimidates like a threat to ransom joy against the cost of my current peace of mind
When trying to have eyes for the future leaves me currently blind
Withdrawals of worry like an addict of stress that makes empty promises to try to control
As I sedate with coping mechanisms of displaced solutions that take from my soul
Resetting my affections in conversations with God
I make my requests as I wrestle and suffer through
Trying to get a feel for what’s real or just a facade
When the illusion is the thought of tomorrow from today’s point of view
Today’s struggles are their own battles to preoccupy attention
Yet even at that, my prayer keeps me balanced amid the suspension
Learning to let God’s peace surpass understanding
When every moment comes with its own turbulence, I lay off the weight
Letting go of tomorrow and the mentality of my anxiety, demanding
I hold onto this moment and salvage what’s left, tomorrow can wait…
